I occasionally hear Barossa Valley Shiraz described as “too ripe”, “too powerful” or “too expensive”, and while I don’t agree with those descriptors, there is a nice compromise currently available that exhibits the Barossa nose but in a medium-bodied style which won’t blow the budget.
The 2009 The Father in Law Shiraz is made by Charles Melton and is a blend of grapes from the Barossa and Clare Valleys. While there’s a hint of the Barossa in its robust pluminess, it has terrific balance, spiciness and a good handful of tannins compliments of the imported fruit from the Clare.
It’s an ideal food wine as neither the jamminess or tannins dominate, and its refined style means it will never offend. You can’t go past it for value at around $20-$22 a bottle as it drinks well above its price-point.
