Captains Paddock, Shiraz Merlot Cabernet 2012

I’d never heard of Captains Paddock Winery until a friend recently returned from a work trip to Kingaroy and hastily thrust a bottle of their 2012 Shiraz Merlot Cabernet in my direction.

My research suggests that the winery is only 8 kms north-east of Kingaroy and offers a cellar door outlet, café and a B&B for those who travel from afar. Their primary focus is on Verdelho, Chardonnay and Merlot, but the dry red blend is at the top of their list and price point.

I was a little apprehensive (given the usual prejudices!) but I found the nose to be very good with ripe raspberries and a hint of dusty cocoa. The raspberries become stewed plumbs and spicy Crème de Cacao once it crossed the palate and was impressive in the way the fruit holds its own right through to a lingering finish.

I’m not sure whether it’s the rich red volcanic soils or the winemaking styles engaged, but there’s an unmistakable South Burnett mouldiness on the finish that regrettably doesn’t leave the taste buds until you take another sip. Maybe served with strong flavours or meaty game dishes it will find its niche?

But if you are happy to accept a few warts on your ($24) supermodel, the Captains Paddock Shiraz Merlot Cabernet is a drinkable proposition and a worthwhile means of parochially supporting the Sunshine State’s growing wine industry.
